POLIMI European Patent Litigation Certificate - 2026 Edition

COURSE PRESENTATION

The POLIMI European Patent Litigation Certificate is a course accredited by the UPC Administrative Committee (Decision D-AC/07/19072024_E 19 July 2024 of the Administrative Committee), aimed at qualifying participants, after a final exam, as UPC representatives, according to Art. 48.2 of the UPC Agreement and R. 286.2 of the Rules of Procedure.

The 2026 edition will start on 18th November 2025.

PATENT LITIGATION CERTIFICATE

The course will provide, those who will successfully pass the exam, with a European Patent Litigation Certificate, which is an appropriate qualification according to Art. 48.2 of the UPC Agreement. According to R. 286.2 of the UPC Rules of Procedure a European Patent Attorney wishing to represent parties before the Unified Patent Court and be inserted in the list of UPC representatives, under Article 48(3) of the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court, shall lodge the Certificate at the UPC Registry.

TRAINING FORMAT & DISTANCE LEARNING

The course comprises 120 hours, divided into three-hour modules each, with lessons once a week in the morning and in the afternoon, for a total of 20 days, of which 17 of theoretical lessons and 3 of practical training.

Lectures will be in English. Lecturers have been selected for their competence and their teaching skills.

The course will be held both online, using Microsoft Teams, and in person, if at least eight participants have registered to attend the course in person. 

In-person attendance is encouraged, but is only mandatory for the three days of practical training.

All participants will have access to video-recordings of lectures, presentations and course material, which will be downloadable from the website with a personal password. 

AI summaries of the lectures will be provided to the participants to help them in the learning process.

EXAM

The final exam will be organized the day after the end of the practical training, and it will comprise three parts:

Part a) Written – 30 multiple choice questions,

Part b) Written – a legal case to be solved 

Part c) An oral exam starting with the discussion of the legal case.

LOCATION

Unless the course is organized exclusively online, lectures will be held at the headquarters of the Department of Energy of the Politecnico di Milano in via Lambruschini 4 , 20156 Milano – Bovisa, Italy, which can be easily reached by the underground railway (stops Bovisa or Villapizzone).
